  1. Project 2 - Rationale

When I started this assignment I knew I was going to do it about my trip to Asia. I had a fair bit of information on where we went, how we traveled and what we did. Being a infographic about my trip to Asia I tried to make the style reflect that, using only warm colours and a grainy texture. I ran into trouble after I had collated my information into a excel spreadsheet as I didn’t know how to display the information that I had in creative ways. I chose to create a map to show where we traveled also showing how we traveled depending on the colour of line. Then using the same colours for each mode of transport I compared how far we traveled in each mode of transport using a bar graph. Making a graph to show what we did was the hardest to come up with, I wanted two circles to show the duration of the whole trip and show what we did through that, but that didn’t work out. I ended up using blocks to show different days and what we were doing on that day. Finally to show how much we spent throughout the whole trip I chose to have three simple symbols to show the different things we paid for and how much each cost. Overall I think if I were to do this again I would spend more time on coming up with more exciting and creative data visualizations. In conclusion I came up with a infographic showing where we traveled, how we traveled  what we did and how much we spent. I think that even though the data visualizations aren’t to exciting and new they are simple and easy to read, accomplishing what I set out to do in my brief.

  3. Project 2, Brief

Looking at my research there are a lot of great infographics out there and lots of different information to make them about. I want to make one that is personal to myself using information that I have collected. To do this I will create a infographic that is simple and easy to read about the trip that I took to Asia in 2011. Using certain colours and styles I will display information about where I visited, how I traveled and how much money I spent.

Overall it will be a simple personal infographic of my trip to Asia.

Global Internet Traffic Expected to Quadruple by 2015
This infographic designed by the designer Nick Sigler is a great example of how a lot of information can be put together well to inform the viewers. Using information from such places as Cisco systems, Global IP traffic, Forecast 2010 - 2015, Scientific America and Wikipedia he has come up with this well thought out infographic about how the global internet traffic is expected to  quadruple by the year 2015.
To start he has split the infographic into 4 different parts each giving us different information. The first telling us a few facts of how there has been a increase in devices being used, increased broadband speeds, additional internet users and more video. A good way to start and draw the viewer in to read further. The second part ask the question what a zetabyte is and in quite a simple way shows us how big a zetabyte is compared to a byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte etc. 1 Zetabyte being all the digital information stored in 2012. The third part using a map and colours shows us the projected traffic growths by location. He even shows us a few different countries and gives us numbers for the percentage of traffic growth, traffic per month, population and devices per capita. The fourth part is displayed in a iphone shape to show us the projected global device growth from 2010 - 2015, showing us different digital devices we use and in how much percent the use of them will grow till the year 2015.
In all this is a lot of different information to put together and I think that Nick Sigler has done it well. In my opinion he has used the right kind of style and colours to create this infographic for this particular information. He has kept it very simple and spacious with how he has layed it out, what kind of graphs he has used and the style. Using a simple serif font for headings and a san serif for body text it is easily read able. He has also come up with lots of different symbols, and graphs that are easy to understand which aid the information that has been collated. As for the colour palette i think it is a great choice for the topic, using dull red, yellow, orange and teal against a black paper texture working really well. These colours help the infographic make its point and don’t make it harder to read at all.
Overall it is a great infographic that i like the style of and has some good information to share.

Facebook Timelines
I didn’t notice this until now but facebook timelines were actually designed to be like a infographic. Nicholas Felton inspired facebook timelines to read like a infographic of every ones personal life. They are set up in a way that if a person had facebook all their lives they would be able to see each (important or not) date, picture, video, comment etc in their own timeline as a infographic. Right now the way facebook is being used you may not want all the information being displayed in your timeline in it, but you are able to delete those things. A new thing added to the time line is that you can add old photos and memories and change the date so they will be lower on your time line than when you first started using facebook. I thought this was a cool idea because it might not look that good right now but at the end of your life is you wanted to collect all the things from your timeline and put them into a cool infographic to remember everything you have done you could. There is also a video for the Facebook timeline at the link at the end of this post.

Unpacking the Backpacker
I was interested in this infographic because of the information it had. It has a lot of good information but personally i think that it could have been layed out a little better and used better colours or graphics. To me it seemed a bit cluttered, but overall it still delivered the information and made it’s point, so it might just be my personal opinion that I like simple and spaced out work.

Nicholas Felton’s Students Hack Nike+ Data

This was a cool idea, set of infographics and video Made by Nicholas Felton’s Students Hacking Nike+ data. They used the data from Nike+ to show where people using Nike+ run throughout a day in New York. The infographics have been done well show casing all the information gathered from Nike+, as most of Nicholas Felton’s are but i also liked the video a lot, being a timelapse of when and where the runners run through the day. The video is shown in the link at the bottom of the page.

Australian Tourism
I was interested in this infographic as I was looking into how I would create a infographic about travel. This one is done pretty simply with maps and all showing who travels in and out of Australia, where is most popular in Australia and why the people are traveling. Apparently from a comment left at the bottom of the post the information on this graphic can’t be trusted but for the way it is displayed i think it looks pretty good and if it did have the right information would work well.

The Common Cook’s How-Many Guide to Kitchen Conversions
This is a very simple infographic, but it is one of my favorite because it is so simple and mainly because everyone could learn a lot about measurements from this. I think more infographics should be made like this to show different translations in distance and what ever else we need them in.

Hurricanes Since 1851
The infographic maps out storm paths and wind speeds of hurricanes since 1851.  The photo is the projection view of the globe from the south pole perspective.
Overall this inforgraphic looks good and you can see that a lot of information has been collated to create this, I think it works pretty well to display most of the information that they have on these hurricanes.
